Our Primary and Secondary postgraduate teacher training programmes are school-based. This is the best way to experience all aspects of life in school learning from outstanding, practicing teachers. Courses are based over one academic year in our partnership schools which are based across Cornwall and into Devon. A distinctive feature of our programmes is the consideration of the individual trainee which has led to the delivery quality, bespoke training programmes.

We treat trainees as individuals, not statistics. We understand the trainees coming into teaching have different backgrounds and strengths. Therefore we offer bespoke training for individuals to enable them to fulfil their individual professional development needs.

Our school based programmes are led by teachers with significant experience of training teachers. Our training sessions are delivered by specialist teachers with a current knowledge of the classroom. Trainees are supported in school by tutors who have extensive experience of coaching and mentoring; they enable trainees to fulfil their full potential.

The Learning Institute South West is a well-regarded SCITT with over 10 years of experience in training teachers. Since starting in 2004, the SCITT has trained over 300 teachers. 100% of our 2013/14 cohort gained teaching posts in schools. Of our 2014/15 cohort, 80% gained teaching post before even graduating!

Qualified Teacher Status and PGCE
All the Learning Institute South West programmes leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). The programmes meet the requirements of the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL).
Additionally courses which include PGCE/ PGCert carry credits at masters level (Level 7) which can be used towards a full master’s degree with further study completed with an accredited provider.
Assessment
For QTS, you will be assessed through a Professional Portfolio in which you will build evidence of how you are meeting the standards. This evidence will include observations of your teaching and written assignments where you will show your understanding of the profession. Your classroom experience will increase in each successive term of the programme as your confidence and ability to develop. The additional award of PGCE/ PGCert requires trainees to complete academic assignments at HEI Masters level 7.
