FDCM Summer School

Welcome to the Foundation Degree in Child and Adolescent Mental Health (FDCM) Summer School 2016!

Teaching sessions will begin in the week of 5th September. You can access a DRAFT copy of the timetable for Level 4 here.

We hope that you will find these tasks useful.  If you have any problems accessing any of the resources, or have any questions relating to ICT, student support or anything else, please don’t hesitate to email Lorna and Joy: [email protected].

We have also set up a Facebook group for the FDCM summer school where you will be able to meet other students who are starting the Foundation Degree in one of our centres in September, and discuss the tasks if you wish to: www.facebook.com/groups/fdcmsummerschool2016.

Activity 1: IT skills audit

Complete the IT skills audit in the word document below. Save it using the filename format below:

ITSkillsAudit-surname-forename

Then use the tutorials on the website to support you in developing your own skills over the summer.

> IT skills audit

Activity 2: ‘Finding your element’ and ‘Empathy’

a) Please watch Ken Robinson on Finding Your Element.
Consider whether you agree or disagree with the views put forward by Ken. Write a short paragraph justifying your reasons and what has helped you make the decision that you are ready to start the FDCM.

b) Please watch Brené Brown on Empathy.
Now write a reflective account of a situation when you believe you demonstrated empathy over sympathy. Consider the impact and/or difference this has made to the children and young people that you have worked with (if you are not currently working with children and young people, please use a personal account, maybe with a family member or a friend).

Activity 3: Study skills support sheets

Download and read the University of Worcester study skills support sheets ‘Reading efficiently’ and ‘Plagiarism and referencing’. Make notes on these; we will build on these in the first and second taught sessions in September. Please print and bring the two handouts along with your notes to both sessions.

> Plagiarism and referencing
> Reading efficiently

You can also access other study skills support sheets on the University of Worcester website: www.worcester.ac.uk/studyskills

Activity 4: Accessing MindEd resources

MindEd is a free educational resource on children and young people’s mental health for all adults. It is aimed at anyone working or volunteering regularly with children or young people, 0-18 years of age. There are a range of materials extending from the general level to more specialised levels.

All of the e-learning topics in MindEd can be completed as a ‘one off’ or ‘stand-alone’ learning experience. Alternatively, you can sign up to the MindEd learning community and complete several sessions or begin a learning path. Creating an account means that your activity will be recorded in a personal learning account.

Go to www.minded.org.uk and click on the Go to MindEd e-Learning link in the section headed MindEd for Professionals and Volunteers.

Use the search box to locate the session called Safeguarding, and click on Start Session to view the content. You don’t need to sign up for an account but you may choose to if you want to save your progress.

This course will provide you with a useful introduction to things we will be covering in FDCM1005. It should take about 25 minutes to complete.

Activity 5: Review the use of your SOLE page to Register

The University of Worcester uses an online system called SOLE for registration and submission of assignments.  More details about submission will be given during the first few sessions in September, but it is possible to view a preview of the system.

Click on the PowerPoint link below. Scroll over the screen, wherever a hand symbol appears you can explore the SOLE area. First of all try out the Register tab to see what will happen when you register on the course. Following this the show will finish, click on the link again to try out other tabs and links such as course information and assessments.
